HISTROY OF MCCP

By: Vijai Dcunha

Mangalore’ popularly known as Rome of the East, which covers the geographical area of Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts in Karnataka and a part of Kasargod district in Kerala in Western coast of Indian peninsula has around 160 parishes. By and large, over the world people from these places are better known as Mangalureans.

People of this area residing in Oman in the late 1980’s long time realized to have an association that would preserve the culture, language and heritage of home land and would render social and community service. While this thought was just prevailing, in the year 1991, a small association of like-minded people of Mangalorean origin, namely, Walter Monteiro, Mic Max, Robert Cutino, and Gerry Dmello gave wings and feathers to the idea of forming an association and approached to the then Parish Priest of Ruwi, Fr. Augustine Antao S.J.

Far beyond the imagination and expectation, Fr. Augustine overwhelmingly supported this plan and anointed Mangalurean Catholic Community of Parish [the word ‘Community’ later changed to ‘Centre’] to officiate under the patronage and spiritual guidance of the Parish Priest of St. Peter and Paul Church, Ruwi.

Thus, on 17th Oct. 1991, MCCP had planned its first social gathering, which was celebrated with great fervour and zeal.  Robert Cutino became the first President for the Year 1992-93 with handful of office bearers to look after Spiritual, finance and cultural and sports activities, and Ostwald Soares followed the next term.

As MCCP moved to two quick terms, Walter Monteiro lead the 3rd term i.e. 1994 – 95. In the very previous term, the then parish priest Late Rev. Fr. Augustine Antao, had formed the working committee under the able chairmanship of Oswald Soares.  Being small in size, including Lancy Fernandes, Clotilda Fernandes and Walter Monteiro was motivation enough to think and work alike with familial intensity.

On 14.04.1994, a new committee was elected and other team members were Brian Nazreth, Herman Fernandes, John D’Souza, Lancy Fernandes, Nancy D’souza. To avoid the mischief of misusing the word community, the then Bishop His Lordship Late Rev Bernard Gremoli, on 1st August 1994 accepted the collective request to change the word from community to “Centre”, and thus it remained as M.C.C.P.  unchanged. During 1994-95 term, usual competitions such as Drawing, elocution, essay writing, games like Cricket in Qurum Contractors Ground and Throwball at Ghala parish were conducted.

The celebration of sacerdotal silver jubilee of Late Rev Fr. Augustine Antao by M.C.C.P. on 2nd Feb. 1995 is worth recalling. Felicitation song and address composed and presented by the then current President of MCCP Walter Monteiro, moved Fr. Augustine.

10th March 1995, was the inauguration of the new church of Sts. Peter & Paul in Ruwi. Foreign Minister of Holy Father Pope Paul John II, Rt. Rev. His Lordship Poeblo Puente was the main celebrant, and Fr. Augustine arranged only two offerings at the Holy Mass and the MCCP’s then president Walter Monteiro had been given the privilege to walk the aisle and offer at the Alter through His Lordship.  This proves how Mangaloreans were dearly regarded and were given the privilege.

A play ‘Xeghunachi Sun’ written by Walter Monteiro played on 14th Nov. 1996 at a very famous event hosted by MCCP is always remembered in the history of MCCP.  This event was hugely contributed by the MCCP’s legendry personalities like Henry Martis, Oswald Soares, Music score by Apolinaris D’souza, Acoustics by Stanley Fernandes, Keyboard by Joselyn (Apoli’s Son), Cast: Jacintha & Walter Mendonca, Francis Dsouza, Walter Pinto, Vallu, Peter Misquith, Helen Sequeira, Victoria Suaris are innumerable.  This momentous moment is worth remembering. Benedict Pereira handled the finance judicially, yet very liberally.

MCCP took a pride to receive its dueful reward at Vishwa Konkani Ekta Divas organized as a part of first World Konkani Cultural Convention at Nehru Maidan on 09-12-2010.  On this occasion, the then President of India Mrs. Pratiba Patil honoured 25 Konkani associations, from around the world. MCCP was one among them and brought proud moment to all Mangalorean Catholics in Oman.

MCCP had a grand celebration of its 25th year Jubilee in the year 2016, which was inaugurated by the then Bishop Aloysius Paul D’Souza of Managalore Diocese, and many dignitaries world-wide too attended the same.

MCCP has come a long way since its inception in 1991. In the last 28 years the MCCP has extended its work to a number of areas, including sport, recreation, Spirituality, Community and social Service. It would be rather a history that the Community Association has successfully completing 3 decades on a foreign land, and this is surely due to the strong bond among its members and the Guidance of elders. Long live MCCP.
